ABB advances power distribution as industries race to scale electrical infrastructure
  • ABB’s low-voltage switchgear platform adds cybersecure AI predictive intelligence to increase resilience for critical infrastructure
  • Targets data centers, energy infrastructure and process industries with growing power demands
  • Designed to support phased introduction of direct current power architectures as part of ABB’s Infinitus DC portfolio

ABB has introduced MNS 4.0, its next generation low-voltage switchgear, to meet growing power demands and operational requirements in data centers, energy infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, and process industries. Integrating AI-powered condition monitoring and embedded cybersecurity, the industry-leading platform builds on ABB’s established MNS switchgear platform, with 2 million panels deployed globally.

Global data center electricity demand is expected to rise by approximately 1,100 TWh between 2024 and 2030, increasing from around 400-450 TWh today to more than 1,500 TWh by 2030. The MNS 4.0 is engineered for more power density in a smaller footprint, allowing customers more capacity while maintaining the flexibility to scale and reconfigure as operational needs evolve. It delivers the density, efficiency, and availability required by advanced manufacturing and next-generation data centers, while enabling customers to maximize energy savings. As a key component of ABB’s Infinitus Direct Current portfolio, MNS 4.0 also supports the transition to emerging direct current architectures.

Nicole Koeppen, Head of Low Voltage Systems at ABB Smart Power Division, said: “The expansion of data centers, energy infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing is unlike anything before it. These facilities need power systems that can support today’s increasingly sophisticated operational demands and can support the high-efficiency direct current power systems of tomorrow. AI-driven, and ready for what’s next – that is exactly what MNS 4.0 delivers.”

AI-powered condition monitoring – ABB’s CMES system – continuously analyzes from MNS 4.0 operational data to identify critical changes, prompting the proactive interventions that maintain peak system performance. The platform integrates key ABB technologies including the Emax 3 circuit breaker, combining advanced protection with industry-leading sensors and predictive intelligence. Cybersecurity is embedded into the design architecture, certified to IEC 62443-4-1, ensuring secure integration into plant-wide control environments.

With MNS® production bases and service centers in over 30 locations worldwide, ABB delivers first-rate global expertise with responsive local service. The MNS 4.0 will be available for customers in 2027.
