Festo BionicHydrogenBattery

October 2, 2024

The BionicHydrogenBattery from Festo is a completely new, fully automated solution for the energy-efficient storage and low-risk transport of hydrogen with the help of bacteria.

With the biotechnological system BionicHydrogenBattery, Festo is presenting a completely new, fully automated solution for the energy-efficient storage and low-risk transportation of one of the energy sources of the future: hydrogen. It is converted into formic acid with the help of bacteria – at mild temperatures and low pressure compared to previous processes.

Festo presented a unique concept for the simple storage and safe transportation of hydrogen using bacteria with its “BionicHydrogenBattery” exhibit at the Hannover Messe 2024. They emonstrated how industrial bioprocesses can be operated efficiently in the long-term using a wide range of components and solutions from their product portfolio. Festo is also committed to biologization as a field of learning: with modular learning systems, an additional Chamber of Commerce qualification and the development of a “Biomechatronics” degree course.
