Schneider Electric’s Sustainability Leadership Receives Prestigious Awards, Again

By Krystie Johnston, with Frederick Morency

Schneider Electric’s commitment to sustainability has been awarded again by leading global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings in 2025, highlighting the company’s dedication to decarbonization, circularity, and helping their customers reduce emissions.

Big ideas to real world, local impact

Frederick Morency, Vice President of Sustainability, Strategic Initiatives & Innovation at Schneider Electric Canada, sits at the intersection of sustainability strategy, innovation, and business performance. Here, he shares how Schneider helps connect big ideas to real world, local impact. Working closely with their teams, partners, and customers, he ensures sustainability is embedded in how they operate, and how they help others decarbonize, electrify, and use energy more efficiently.

“A big part of my focus is making sure sustainability delivers real, measurable impact – not just for Schneider Electric – but across our broader ecosystem of customers and suppliers,” he says. And leading organizations are perennially recognizing these efforts. Morency says that what stands out is the consistency across so many respected benchmarks. “Being ranked first in the World Benchmarking Alliance’s Social Benchmark and earning an ‘A’ under WBA’s ACT Core methodology reflects the depth of our work, from societal impact and governance to the energy transition.”

EcoVadis, arguably the world’s most trusted contributor of sustainability ratings, placed Schneider Electric among the top 1% of companies with respect to ESG performance in the world for the sixth consecutive year in 2025. Additionally, Schneider was named as the “World’s Most Sustainable Company” by TIME Magazine and Statistica in 2024 and 2025, placing the company at the very top of a global ranking of 500 companies. The ranking evaluated 5,700 companies across more than 20 indicators, including emissions reduction, renewable energy use, sustainability reporting, and verified ESC performance.

Schneider Electric was also recognized as the “World’s Most Sustainable Corporation” by Corporate Knights in 2025 and in 2021 – the first company to top the Global 100 ranking twice. And they have placed in the top 100 rankings every year since. “These recognitions collectively validate the depth and consistency of Schneider Electric’s sustainability leadership,” Morency says. “They show that we are not only making ambitious commitments. We are delivering results, year after year, across climate action, social equality, governance, and transparent communication.”

Schneider’s SSI program

Morency says that Schneider’s sustainability commitment started more than 20 years ago. “Schneider Electric became the first company in our industry to systematically monitor our impact on people, planet, and profits through a pioneering sustainability barometer. That early commitment set the foundation for everything that followed.” For instance, the Schneider Sustainability Impact (SSI) program served as a formal initiative that guided their sustainability strategy from 2021 to 2025.

The SSI program is a global framework that aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and is grounded in science-based targets. At its heart are six long-term commitments that focus on climate action, resource efficiency, trust, equal opportunities, generational empowerment, and community impact. These commitments are supported by 11 global targets, reinforced by localized goals that reflect the specific needs and opportunities within each region where they operate.

Morency explains that Schneider’s SSI program involves everyone, from their employees to their partners, suppliers and customers worldwide, and serves as a framework for proactive climate action. “The ‘why’ is simple: sustainability must be measurable, transparent, and accountable to drive real progress. And the ‘how’ comes from embedding our goals directly into our operations, technology innovation, and supply-chain engagement. Rather than treating sustainability as a separate initiative.”

Real impacts

Schneider’s SSI program was intentionally designed with science-based, quantifiable targets – ensuring their progress is measurable, transparent, and verifiable. In this spirit, anyone can access Schneider’s Sustainability impact results and reports here. For a summary, Morency explains that as of Q4 2025, Schneider Electric reported strong outcomes across their six commitments:

  • Climate Action: 862 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions saved or avoided for customers, far exceeding baseline expectations; 56% reduction of CO₂ emissions from Schneider’s top 1,000 suppliers’ operations
  • Resource Efficiency: major increases in recycled and sustainable materials across Schneider’s product lines; 85% reduction in single use plastic in packaging, replaced by recycled cardboard
  • Trust: progress in supplier adherence to decent work standards and improved employee confidence in speaking up on ethical concerns
  • Equal Opportunity: growth in gender diversity across hiring, frontline management, and leadership roles; over 60 million people given access to green electricity, surpassing the program’s 50 million target
  • Generations: nearly doubling the hiring of interns, apprentices, and new graduates; over 1 million people trained in energy management, up from 280k at baseline
  • Local Impact: 100% of Country and Zone Presidents delivered local impact commitments in their regions. For example, in Canada, Schneider Electric exceeded their goals for employee engagement in community programs focused on STEM education, sustainability, energy transition & environmental stewardship, health and well‑being, and diversity, equity & inclusion.
    • These outcomes show a company‑wide transformation—not only reducing Schneider’s own footprint, but enabling global partners, suppliers, and customers to accelerate their sustainability impact as well.
    • Moving forward, the next phase is about building on this strong foundation, scaling impact, and continuing to align sustainability with innovation and performance.

Sustainability is a journey

For Schneider Electric, sustainability is not a finish line, it is continuous journey. The advice that Morency offers to individuals or businesses about sustainability is to start where you are and be intentional and measurable in your approach. “Real sustainability progress comes from setting clear goals, making data-driven decisions, and partnering with organizations that can help you scale your impact. Sustainability is not only about reducing carbon footprints. It is also about boosting energy efficiency, improving productivity, and building resiliency into your operations.”

Whether you are managing a building or a factory, the key is to take steps that make your organization more efficient today while preparing for the uncertainties of tomorrow. Schneider Electric is a trusted partner because they have deep expertise in energy management, automation, and digitalization – backed by decades of proven sustainability leadership. They are both a provider and a practitioner of energy technology. They meet customers wherever they are on their sustainability journey, and they apply the very same technologies across their own global operations to decarbonize, electrify, and improve efficiency in practical, actionable ways.

“Sustainability is the backbone of Schneider Electric’s strategy, culture, and the value we create for our business and our ecosystem of customers and partners. From electrification and automation to advanced digital solutions, our energy technologies are designed to help organizations operate more efficiently, more resiliently, and more sustainably,” Morency says. “We believe that meaningful progress does not happen in isolation. The challenges we face – from climate change to energy security – are becoming more complex and interconnected. That is why collaboration across industries, sectors, and ecosystems is essential.”

Summary

The greatest opportunities for impact come when businesses, governments, technology partners, and communities work together to accelerate the transition to a more digital, electric, and low-carbon future. “At Schneider Electric, we are committed to being both a leader and a partner in that transformation – helping others move from ambition to action, while holding ourselves to the same standards of accountability and measurable progress.”
